Contemporary Music For All Festival: Midlands

5th-6th March 2016
University of Wolverhampton Music Department, Walsall & CBSO Centre, Birmingham

Celebrating a decade of CoMA’s ground-breaking Open Score project, this Festival promotes contemporary music with a participative approach.

Open Score is a way of writing artistically challenging yet technically accessible music for flexible ensembles with amateur players. Works by more than thirty established, up and coming, student and amateur composers will be performed across the Midlands, London, Manchester, Cardiff and Edinburgh.

In the Midlands, workshops, rehearsals and concerts will be taking place the weekend of Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 March 2016 at the University of Wolverhampton Music Department and CBSO Centre, Birmingham.

The weekend will give opportunities for players of all abilities to join with musicians from Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and CoMA East Midlands & West Midlands to work on two pieces by composers with strong CoMA associations – Plain Harmony by Michael Finnissy and a new version of The Second Key by Tansy Davies. These will be performed alongside other CoMA pieces in a public concert on the Sunday evening. Both composers will attend, and will also lead an all-comers creative workshop on the Saturday evening.

On Sunday, CoMA East Midlands will workshop pieces written for the event by families participating in BCMG’s regular Music Maze workshop. There will also be opportunities for singers to participate, building on BCMG’s success with David Lang’s 1,000-voice Crowd Out in 2014. BCMG/Sound & Music Apprentice Composer-in-Residence Patrick Brennan will also contribute a new open score work for premiere by a family group working with BCMG.

Full details of the weekend will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, for further information please contact BCMG’s Director of Learning and Participation Nancy Evans via nancy@bcmg.org.uk or call 0121 616 2616.
