London based pianist Rika Zayasu features five piano works written since 2002 with special guest saxophonist and composer Nick Roth.

London based pianist Rika Zayasu performs a fine selection of recent works by some of the most vibrant composers of our time from different generations. The concert features works by Evis Sammoutis, Edd Caine, Thomas Simaku, Christian Mason, and John Stringer, intertwined with inspirational music by Bach, Debussy, Sibelius and Stravinsky.

Rika is joined by the saxophonist and composer Nick Roth for the world premiere of Christian Mason’s set of 5 songs, ‘On Love and Death’ arranged for soprano sax and piano.

Rika Zayasu + Nick Roth Biography

Japanese pianist Rika Zayasu was born in Tokyo in 1972. She was trained at the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt (1st prize with jury’s unanimity), Guildhall School of Music and Drama (MMus) and University of York (MPhil) while also receiving private tuitions by Denis Pascal, Michel Béroff and Maria Curcio, the legendary pupil of Artur Schnabel.

Enthusiastic about new music, she gave several world premieres in the UK and abroad. Following the completion of her thesis on the music of T?ru Takemitsu, she gave the world premiere of her piano transcription of Takemitsu’s Requiem for string orchestra at St Martin-in-the-fields to critical acclaim. Her new album featuring piano works by Debussy and Takemitsu will be released on Claudio Records in 2012.

Rika Zayasu performs as a recitalist and chamber musician and recent appearances include London, Paris, and Tokyo. During the 2012/13 season Rika Zayasu will make several appearances in the UK, at the venues including St John’s Smith Square in London, West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge, and Sir Jack Lyon’s Concert Hall in York.

She currently lives in west London with her husband and Welsh springer spaniel.

Nick Roth

Born into a musical family in London, Nick moved to Dublin aged 19 and has since become one of the most active musicians on the Irish and European music scene, working as a saxophonist, composer, educator and producer.

Nick studied in London under Gilad Atzmon and in Dublin under Ronan Guilfoyle, and undertook further studies in New York under Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Vijay Iyer and Peter Epstein, and in Hungary at the Kodály Institute.

He holds a Licentiate in Saxophone Performance from the London Guildhall School of Music (DipLGSM (Hons)) and a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz Performance from Newpark College of Music Dublin (BAJP). He has also been the recipient of several major awards and prizes, including three Project: New Work Awards from the Arts Council of Ireland, a Bursary Award (in ’08) and first prize at the ’08 Siemens Feis Ceol Competition in the Chamber Music category.

As a saxophonist he has performed in leading festivals and venues around the world, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Holland, Greece, Hungary, Switzerland, Uruguay and Argentina. He has also undertaken research trips and field study of traditional music in Hungary, Bosnia Herzegovina, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Romania, Greece, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Macedonia.

He has worked with many of the world’s leading contemporary artists including John Taylor, Julian Arguelles, Savina Yannatou, Tom Arthurs, Ben Davis, Rick Peckham, Steve Arguelles, Emer Mayock, Florian Ross, Merlin Shepherd, Jamie Oehlers, Mihály Borbély, Miklós Lukács, Gilad Atzmon, Sean Carpio, Furio di Castri, Zohar Fresco, Javid Afsari Rad, Shekoyokh, Louis Stewart, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Abdullah Chhadeh, John Abercrombie, Theodosii Spassov, Pedram Zavir Kamini, Greg Felton and with composers Mamoru Fujeida, Ian Wilson and Elaine Agnew.

As a recording artist and as Head of Production at Diatribe Records he has a discography of 18 critically-acclaimed releases dating from 2006.

Nick is the musical director of Yurodny, and also performs regularly with Francesco Turrisi’s ‘Tarab’, Simon Roth’s ‘Mayday Sextet‘, The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra and Matthew Jacobson‘s ‘Redivider‘.

Nick is currently a part-time lecturer in Aural Perception and Eastern European Traditional Music at University College Cork and Jazz Studies at Trinity College, Dublin.

His music is published by the Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin.
